The seminar, entitled “Marine Insurance in the Age of Volatility: From Theory to Practice,” was part of the educational series “Familiarization with the Institutions of Maritime Law.”
It was organized by Isalos.net, with support from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (LL.M. in Maritime Law), the University of the Aegean, and held under the auspices of the Foundation.
Hellenic Hull and the Human Element in Marine Insurance
Hellenic Hull was proud to take part in this discussion. Our CEO, Ilias Tsakiris, joined a panel of experts to share thoughts and insights on the risks, responsibilities, and rapid developments in today’s marine insurance landscape.
At Hellenic Hull, we firmly believe that the future of marine insurance depends on our ability to invest in the human element. With the industry facing increasing complexity, from climate risk and geopolitical instability to digital disruption and regulatory evolution, we need executives who are continuously trained and forward-thinking.
That belief is central to our strategy to enhance education in marine insurance by investing in academic institutions, knowledge-sharing platforms, and initiatives such as Isalos.net.
From Theory to Practice
The seminar began with a presentation by Dr. Viktoria Athanasopoulou, who spoke about uncertainty in risk and legal clarity in marine insurance contracts.
That set the tone for an interactive discussion featuring:
- Vivi Koliopoulou, President of WISTA Hellas & Insurance Manager, Angelicoussis Group.
- Elina Souli, Deputy Head of Office, Associate Director – Claims, Britannia P&I Club.
- Ilias Tsakiris, CEO of Hellenic Hull, General Manager of American Club (Europe) & Chair of the Ocean Hull Committee, International Union of Marine Insurance.
Through an interactive discussion, they presented the principles and challenges of P&I Clubs and Hull & Machinery insurance, highlighting key concepts such as the non-profit nature of P&I Clubs, rising geopolitical risks, the shipping industry’s green transition, the importance of due diligence and good faith by shipowners, and the critical role of insurance certificates in daily vessel operations.
Closing with Reflection and Perspective
The event concluded with a historical case study presented by Dr. Nikolaos Berketis, Manager of I. Kouroutis & Co. Ltd – Insurance and Reinsurance Brokers in Piraeus.
The case examined whether the actions of the captain of the M/V TOKEI MARU during the 1922 Destruction of Smyrna would, by today’s standards, qualify as general average.
